Recognition Programs: Cobwebs Can Be Cleaned
Time. It’s the never-ending force that will continue far beyond what we can comprehend. We see the effects of time in our lives which are comparatively short in the grand scale of eternity. For example, when an object of human creation is not maintained, it starts to fall to disrepair, gather dust, grow cobwebs, and eventually break or fall apart. Well, let’s step back from the cliff of an existential crisis for a second, and look at how time relates to recognition programs.
Recognition programs are a lot like a table. You build it up to be sturdy and support your needs and if maintained, can serve you and your family for years. But what if you inherit a dusty old table from your late Great-Aunt Marge, find a forgotten table in your storage unit from your first apartment, or simply never go into the dining room and from years of avoiding it, the table lost its shine? Do you throw out the table? Or do you try and restore it? A little bit of dust and cobwebs do not ruin the table; with a little elbow grease, you can restore it to its prime.
This is the same for recognition programs. Whether you inherit a recognition program from another employee, you have forgotten you even had a recognition program, or you have simply avoided the program to focus on other projects, you are faced with a choice. Do you throw the solution out completely, find a new solution, or try and fix the one you currently have?
I’m not saying all old recognition programs are still worth keeping. Sometimes looking for an alternative solution is the answer to your problems. However, if the problem with the program is related to human habits, usually you can look internally for a solution, saving you thousands of dollars. You wouldn’t want to find yourself in the same situation 3 years from now.
Here are some components of recognition programs that can be fixed by your team without buying into a new program:
- Program Literacy
If any or all the above are problems with your recognition program, you will want to read our e-book entitled, “Has Your Recognition Program Grown Cobwebs?” In it, we go over how you can recognize these issues and suggestions on how to resolve them.
